Omar’s Story
11/10/97
While flying home after attending a conference on prayer evangelism in Argentina, my wife and I, through God’s circumstances, found ourselves sitting next to an Argentine businessman named Omar. After the usual greeting and small talk about the weather, he began to tell us how much his wife and children miss him because he travels so much. I sensed the Holy Spirit saying to me, “Heart-felt need.”
Lenore was tired but agreed to pray as I continued to converse with Omar. The conversation Omar and I had was, I believe, directed by the Holy Spirit. The reason I say this is because the Holy Spirit revealed Bible passages to me that applied to each topic of discussion. As I spoke them out, Omar agreed with God’s truth.
During the conversation I would turn to Lenore and say, “Keep praying.” She would reply, “I am.” As Omar and I conversed, the Holy Spirit pointed out to me that this man loved his wife and children and that his job was stressful and demanding. Omar felt something in his life was missing; he was searching for more.
Well, you can guess the rest of the story. Yes, by the grace of God, Omar is now a child of God. We prayed the sinners’ prayer together; he repented of his sins, accepted the precious gift of eternal life through our Lord Jesus Christ, and asked God to fill him with His Holy Spirit. Omar made a commitment to read and study God’s Word on a daily basis; he seemed to mean it with all his heart.
We are in awe of the power of the Holy Spirit. We didn’t know Omar before we sat down beside him on that airplane; now he is our brother in Christ. This was God’s appointed time for this man; we were a small part of God’s great purpose for His chosen ones. Praise to our God of mercy and grace!
