Beast
7/24/2000
I had a dream. I saw a two-lane road with a “T” intersection. In the far lane of the through road, the traffic was moving very slowly. It was backed up quite a bit and people were looking out of their windows as if there was some sort of accident on the roadside. As I walked up from the joining road to the intersection, I noticed that in the other lane there was no traffic at all. I looked towards my right-hand side and in the grassy area on the roadside I saw an older, nicely-dressed woman with a hunting bow and arrow. She was taking aim at an animal that I had just caught a glimpse of over her shoulder. At first, it looked to me like a dog, a Collie breed, reddish in color. Then I noticed that the side of its face was different; it had a long ear, but the front features of its face looked odd.
The woman with the bow and arrow started to move close and she appeared to be taking careful aim at the animal; I sensed she needed to be very precise. As she moved a little closer, the animal moved and looked at her; then I saw the other side of its face-- it was the face of a leopard. If you split the animal from head to tail the right side of the animal was a leopard and the left side was a Collie. On the right front of the animal were the spots of a leopard going down the front leg to the feline paw. On the other side it was that of a Collie dog. The one side of the rear end of the animal was that of a Collie and the other side was the same coloring as the dog but had a feline paw for a foot. The tail was that of a leopard but it had the same long hair as a Collie dog.
The woman continued stalking the animal, taking aim at it, and the word “beast” came to my mind. Soon the woman had moved close enough to disturb the animal; it got up from its prone position. I realized that the people in the cars were looking at this unique animal as it walked with a cat-like motion up onto the roadway, stopping and starting, walking towards the traffic in the opposite lane.
The woman was still closing in on the animal. She came to a point where she actually aimed her arrow at point-blank range at the animal’s belly, kind of holding her bow in an awkward position, trying to make sure she would not miss her target. I had a great sense that this woman was only supposed to hit the heart and another word came to me: “intercessor.” The woman needed to aim her prayers only at the heart. As I looked at the animal another word came to me: “double-minded.”
The animal seemed to be looking for a way through the bumper-to-bumper traffic. The beast was looking at the people in the vehicles as it passed them by, and they were looking at the beast not believing what they were seeing. Eventually the beast made it to the other side of the road and ran over and raided a chicken coup. That was the end of the dream.
Comments, observations and some definitions:
I thought back to my childhood; my dad and his parents always had Collie dogs as pets and they were originally bred for herding sheep.
The traffic on the roadway was moving in one direction only and the animal was walking against the traffic in the opposite lane.
It seemed to me that at anytime the woman could have shot her arrow and hit the animal, but I sensed it was very important to the intercessor to only shoot her arrow if she was sure she could hit the heart. I felt the reason the intercessor did not shoot her arrow, even being as close as she was to the animal, was that she knew that she was not sure she could hit the heart. I felt like the arrow represents God’s prayer. I believe that this is a picture for intercession today; we need to have strategic prayer for people’s hearts.
“Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded” (James 4:8). True repentance is what purifies our hearts.
